DERELICT

1,694

Something has been found at the bottom of Earth's ocean. An ancient artifact that can only be described as a giant door, inset into the sea floor. It becomes known as the Vault. A gigantic enigma, buried and forgotten...nineteen thousand feet down. To study the artifact, the galaxy's most powerful corporation, Maas-Dorian, has built a massive, self-contained, secret laboratory base surrounding it, named FATHOM. It's objective: unlock the secrets of the artifact and discover what it holds. But some mysteries should remain buried. And some doors should never be opened....The story of DERELICT begins with season one, FATHOM, a narrative podcast experience from award winning science fiction author J. Barton Mitchell, and produced by Night Rocket Productions.Website: derelictpodcast.com

Easy to listen to again and again
The sound effects work on this is amazing. It’s like listening to a movie while driving down the freeway. It had my car shaking. AMAZING!

    Sound design hurts
I’m interested in the story but really distracted by the sometimes painfully high or low pitched context sounds. I sometimes have to turn the volume down to not hurt my ears, but then I can’t hear dialogue. Sound balance could be a lot better.

    Enjoyed a lot
The story was great, the acting was good. The only reason I can’t give it 5 stars is the sound mix. There are many points throughout where it is very difficult to hear the dialog because it’s audio levels are so low and the sound effects are so loud. I’m listening in April of 2025 and despite hearing the producer address this during a mid-season update and remaster episodes I still find many parts where certain character dialog is still very low and washed out by everything going on. Despite that it’s very entertaining and does a good job of painting the scene with audio effects and sparking the imagination.

    Terrible
The best characters killed off! No one learns! And if it’s because of the object in the ocean….well then it creates nothing but anger and rage and we have enough of that in society NOW!

    Awesome
Immensely great podcast. I have enjoyed every episode to the point have listened 3-4 times each episode. The one downer for me is waayyy too much swearing.

Meh - way too long to come out.
I started listing in the winter of 2023-2024. Here I am a year + later with only 6 more episodes. Decent podcast but not at good as season 1. Hopfully it doesn’t take another 6 months for the rest of the season.

    Exceptional Sci-Fi
blows Fathom out of the water. absolutely exceptional sci-fi. quality writing and acting. can’t wait for more!

    Would be a 5 if…
First of all this show delivers some twists that you occasionally see coming. But there are 2 heart wrenching episodes and I have to say “the devils toys” in season 2 had no business being that emotional. It had to be alphas voice for me

I need a direct IV line to all new episodes!
I came across this little beauty after having finished The White Vault. Found it on the “More like this” list on Spotify and now that I’ve finished Part 1 of Season 1 OH MY GAWD I NEED THIS PUMPED INTO MY VEINS. The sound design! The voice acting! Most importantly the story! The character arcs! Actual arcs! Y’all know how hard it is to find stories like this in podcast form with believable character arcs?! Almost impossible. I was on the edge of my office desk, becoming shooketh by everything about this story. Not only is it well executed and produced, it’s phenomenally acted and has awesome writing. The dialogue is superb! I’m so excited to binge ALL the seasons!

    The sound effects are Amazing!!
  • fuzzypantalones
    well produced
acting and writing are really well done. i like to listen to this in the car on my long drives, but the effects seem too loud and overwhelming the actors. i have a hard time understanding the dialogue in any kind of action scene. esp this last episode. idk what was going on by the end

It’s amazing. Both season are wonderful. Do hope we get more in the future! The creator(s) are super talented.

    Loch is obnoxious
Not only is Loch’s character just annoying as it is… her cadence, her overly acted smugness, etc. but I know she probably couldn’t help it but the actress should have gotten over her cold before they recorded because the stuffy nose is extremely distracting.

    Wow. Just wow. But…..
Season 1- 5 star. Season 2- 2 star. Season 1 Single-handedly THE best podcast production I’ve ever heard. Well cast, well written and well balanced. Even if sci-fi isn’t your thing, I could see you enjoying this furious, shape-shifting & dynamic bit of chaos. Loved it till Season 2. Took a dramatic nosedive in production quality. Cast feels a notch lower and it’s a repeat of season one in terms of dramatic suspense - everything is critically life threatening and comes down to the last half a second. Will continue regardless! Voice to sfx volumes are considerably mismatched- an airlock opening blows your ears up while voice is a strain to hear at lowered volume. As the episodes proceed, the few voices remaining….. tend….. to……. Speak……with large….. gaps?…… betweeen…. Words. You’ll know it when you hear it. It keeps getting worse.

    Great podcast
Super entertaining. Awesome audio and voice acting.

Story is complex, but INSANELY good
I’ve listened to a fair number of scripted podcasts but this is head, shoulders and torso above EVERY other one. The story is very complex and doesn’t pander to the casual listener, so take note, you WILL get lost if you don’t actively listen. The writing and dialog is jaw droppingly good, zero plot holes on a multi generational storyline, and the acting is extraordinary and 100% believable. Oh and the sound design is legendary, just sooo good. It’s well worth waiting months for each episode, they’re that good.

What is not to love? The twist and turns are amazing, sound effects and acting are topnotch!!

    Great writing & acting!
Really enjoying this story, characters are believable and the storyline exciting!

Lots of panting and just noise
I started w season 2 and don't love it. I thought it would be good sci fi in the beginning but IMO it's definitely horror genre. There is a lot of panting, mostly by the female actors. Not sure why, it seems gratuitous as if they're turned on. There's also just a ton of loud background noise when things are happening but it's not really clear what it represents. If it was a movie the sound effects would work, but not so much here.

Fathom = the best sci-fi podcast ever, by a long margin
Season 1 (Fathom) is off the charts in terms of plot, pacing, thrills, characters and their development, music and especially sound design (though the dialogue could be mixed a bit better to ensure it’s sufficiently intelligible). Honestly it’s so good that I anti-binge it: each episode could be a stand-alone mini-movie, and each is so intense and rewarding that I can’t take another episode for another month. You almost have to “recover” before proceeding to the next. Someone in Hollywood should consider buying up the rights.
  • Lincoln13579
    Great podcast
This is an amazing podcast but I can’t give it 5 stars because the sound effects are SO LOUD and I can’t hear what the characters are saying. Please fix the sound effect volume and I will give this 5 stars.
  • Fatpanda15
    Awesome!
Before listening, wasn’t sure what it would be like. Can now say that it is a great story!
  • Fistofury
Should be picked up as a TV show!
With the exception of some of the better Q code shows, this has the best production value, writing, and acting of any fiction podcast out there. Would love more!
  • rdjoh
One of the very best podcast dramas I have ever heard
Excellent story and acting. Lots of action, explosions, mayhem, but somehow they make sure you know what is going on at all times. So many podcasts have great sound design but you can’t figure out what is happening to the characters - this podcast makes sure that never happens to listeners.
  • CMSharpe
    Awesome
Great story, great writing, good acting (Agent Blaine rocks) all comes off as professionally done. Worth a listen.
  • Geopetchia
    Phenomenal
This podcast is the absolute best podcast I have ever listened to. Most of the reviews are about sound quality but they must have fixed it because I’ve had no issues. I’m listening to this constantly. 8 hours a day, the creators did a phenomenal job.
  • wave9349
    Incredible production value, impactful story
This is the best science fiction podcast I’ve ever discovered. While the story may sound generic if you read about it, the actual way it plays out, the intensity of the performances and the exceptional sound design makes this podcast truly stand out. It gets better and and better as you listen. Just a top notch experience. Well done and thank you!

    Just keeps getting better
New season is even better than the last. Loving how the story is evolving. Very interesting and great sound.

    Great story, no production schedule
Better just wait for 2030. The second half of season 1 derelict should be posted by then.
  • Bhindi9
    Great story
Very immersive experience and love the characters and story. There's a current project of improving the sound balancing, which is much appreciated and well worth a listen for anyone who struggled like I did previously. Thank you to the production team for listening to all the feedback, I'm so excited to hear what you have in store for us soon!
  • Tf6155
    Great binge
This show is perfect for long drives! Loved both seasons. Keep up the excellent work

    My Favorite Sci-Fi podcast!
I was looking for something to get into. I had been let down by some earlier podcasts before but this one was spectacular. I love the twists and turns and the voice acting is great. I appreciate the sound design a lot too. I don’t think it is too loud because I feel it effectively adds intensity to certain scenes. I’m ok when the environmental sounds sometimes compete with dialogue because in the heat of the action everything is going so fast. It is just exciting! I love this podcast, great work guys!
  • Gemgf
    Too loud!
As so many have said, -please- turn down the sound effects. They completely drown out the voices too much of the time. :( Otherwise, this would be 5 Stars.
  • dsharp987
    Sound effects are deafening 🤕
The plot is really intriguing and voice acting is amazing- I want to keep listening but it’ll be at the expense of my hearing! Even with high quality headphones it’s very difficult to hear the dialogue bc the sound effects (incessant beeping of alarms, crashing, etc) drown it out. Thought I could remedy this by following along with the transcript so I can know what’s being said, but the dialogue is so quiet that it can’t even be transcribed! Such a bummer 😭
  • Spudnuts JR
    Immersive
Great show I binge it once a year waiting for new episodes

I find this podcast entertaining and enjoyable. I think it is well made and produced too.

    Love it
Love it!! Only thing is the volume control but it amazing
  • Orion Aerospace
    Mindblowingly Good
I didn’t even know podcasts could BE this good. Every time I’m listening to this I find my eyes unfocusing while I visualize the scene. I’ll just stop in the middle of vacuuming the floor and stand still, listening. Cannot confirm the same will happen to you, but the fantastic plot, suspense, and acting should be universal. Must listen.
  • Takamurasan7
    Almost Perfect
Great stories and twists. I easily am immersed with what’s happening… until loud sound effects drown out everything the characters are saying and I lose what’s happening. I shouldn’t have to go back and read the transcripts to know what was said. Everything else is amazing and pulls you in. If they can tone down the crashes during dialogues, it’s be 5 stars.
  • JennSteamboat
    Obsessed!
Engrossing. Once you start you can’t stop.
  • molowry
    Great story!
I love this story so much!! The voice actors are amazing. It’s hard to find stories like this to listen to with such well written and well performed dialogue. Only one thing is I might be too old and have crappy speakers to fully enjoy it though. The noise of the action, effects and music make that superb dialogue hard to understand. The downside to movie soundtrack production podcasts is no closed captions. HahahHaha! *sigh* I wish I could adjust the dialogue louder or bring it to the front more because I know I’ve missed stuff - and I hate that because it’s such a good podcast.

    Huh? What did she say?
Team Derelict knocked it out of the park, but then tripped on the way to home plate. It’s a great story but I suffered through the first season with the hopes that they would have overcome their audio challenges by S2. Alas, season two is just as hard to understand the dialogue in as S1. The acting is great, the story is very good, really everything rocks except for the SUPER LOUD audio effects that drown out half of the dialogue in every episode. I really want to know how S2 ends, but after four episodes, I couldn’t take it anymore. I honestly think I had the volume up so loud to understand the words that I was harming my hearing. Derelict Team. Please re-mix the audio and let us all know when you have. I will happily return and give you 5 stars.
  • NobodyX7
    Compelling
Bold and interesting sci-fi story with horror elements. Beeping sound effects can be irritating though. Can’t wait for the rest of season 2.
