Divided States of Women

223

Too often, women are thought of as a monolithic bloc, and they were often discussed that way throughout the 2016 election. But women are in fact divided on major issues. Liz Plank (a progressive) and Hitha Herzog (a conservative) are friends who get along, but don't always agree. Together, they cover the complicated, multifaceted, intersectional debates that make up the life of the modern American woman. Produced by the Vox Media Podcast Network.

Lively and informed take on relationships
I was a recent guest on #single and am also a fan. Jeanette brings such enthusiasm for her interviews, which always go much deeper than surface level. They’re real about the upsides and downsides of modern dating, and give valuable insights, whether the listener is single or not. I especially liked the Alexandra Laplante episode on her journey to polyamory.

    #Truth Spoken Here
These are smart ladies who cover interesting topics & present the facts w/in the scope of their personalities. Unfortunately, certain people feel the need to bash those who examine the world through their narrow world view & feel the need to go full blown whiny Karen in the review section Seriously, there is a lot to be gleaned here & whether you agree or not, these women make it interesting

    Great!
I have a hard time reading the low scores posted for this podcast. I found the women to be insightful despite me not agreeing with *everything* they said. It opened a door for me to learn and listen to a perspective outside of my own (something most of America needs to do!). I introduced the podcast to my boyfriend, and we listened to a few episodes together. He too found it insightful and we had some very evolving conversations. I would recommend to all people, even those who don’t call themselves feminist or liberal, it’s two intelligent women, intelligently laying out their perspective on our society.

    Brilliant and Necessary
I’ve enjoyed Liz Plank’s work for awhile now, and this podcast does not disappoint. Don’t listen to the bad reviews, they’re probably Russian trolls ...

    Finally!
I love each episode more. It's so easy to demonize the other side of political fights, and I think this show does a phenomenal job of humanizing the debate and utilizing research and diverse voices. Thank you!

    Disappointing
I was really hoping for a podcast that would value the conservative women’s voice and promote a strong discussion. I don’t associate with feminists because of the strong rhetoric liberal feminists have against values that I see as important. But I understand the importance of women coming together and discussing some of these issues, EVEN if we don’t agree. That is why I subscribed to this podcast. Unfortunately, Hitha (the conservative) is hardly in the episodes. Liz goes and interviews people that she already agrees with. There is no debate or looking at the other side. Unfortunately, I’ll be unsubscribing.

    All the way ok
I feel like they don’t go in depth enough with any topic; just giving very high level disagreement on some topics but not going anywhere new. Also, their most recent episode about infidelity was not complete. It cut off in the middle of an interview. I happened to find it the most interesting episode to date, so that was disappointing.

    Disappointed
I honestly tried to give this podcast a few tries and most of the time it made me extremely disappointed because of the narrow viewpoints. I am a liberal, cis-gendered woman, and a feminist, so I thought this podcast would be great to listen to. The hosts on this podcast 'try' to make themselves sound like progressive, intersectional feminists but end up sounding like the stereotypical "whiney feminists" people love to make fun of. Please try to be a bit more open to others' experiences and try to not keep everything contained into this white feminist narrative.

Perfect if you're looking for tone-deaf hot takes
Hi, first time listener here. The podcast about body-hating didn't sit right with me. It's a very nuanced topic and their analysis just...wasn't. 1) The hosts have a very surface-level understanding of what the body positivity movement entails. (I would suggest reading The Body is Not an Apology by Sonya Renee Taylor.) It seems as if they think it means "I can love my body even if I'm a size 10!" But at one point, they insisted that there is a point where society *must* or at least should intervene because someone else's weight is a "health risk." They make the distinction between acceptable bodies and bodies that are "morbidly obese." They even insinuate that some bodies are a societal burden because it could raise their insurance premiums. (🙄) It was a really individualistic, unsympathetic, uninformed hot take that was steeped in privilege. However, the guest they interviewed about workplace discrimination & fatphobia seemed more informed, so I'll give them that. Also, if you want to talk about health and weight, why not mention the consequences of these impossible standards? You know, the standards you're reifying in this podcast? Eating disorders are real and they also aren't healthy. Being thin doesn't always equate to being healthy. Their discussion about how you don't "need" money to be healthy was also a little tone deaf. Sanctimonious Whole Foods sheep always want to talk about how expensive McDonald's is, but never want to consider other things that factor into unhealthy diets. For example, someone working minimum wage for 50+ hours per week may not have the time or energy to meal prep with healthy options. Sometimes schedules necessitate paying for convenience even if it means sacrificing your health and spending more in the long run. Your cushy 9 to 5 with paid vacation time affords you the luxury of eating the way you do. Which, to their credit, they mentioned. 2) Hitha's assertion that she can almost transcend race because of her privileges (pretty, thin, and socioeconomic privilege) was super simplistic and her analysis about *why* was unsatisfying. First of all, I am not convinced that people "don't see race" when they see her. "Model minorities" may get close to whiteness, but whiteness is never something that is attainable. People see your race. There is a kernel of truth to her statement in that when someone is a person of color, having any other marginalized identity will push them further away from the standard of whiteness. But that standard is never truly achievable. 3) The way in which women of different races are perceived because of their weight is a crucial aspect of this discussion that was missing. You may not both be white, but this is peak White Feminism (TM). TL; DR: Not a nuanced discussion. Steeped in privilege. They don't know much about body positivity. They dangerously veer into the fatphobic lane at some points. Analysis of race was unsatisfying. Overall a disappointing podcast.

    Keep doing what you do
I feel every bad review here is someone close minded that don't wanna admit it and would answer with hey I'm really open minded but....but this podcast is amazing. I have been following Liz since voxz and she is amazing and the podcast is also amazing

    Stick it to them
Your ratings exhibit the rampant sexism we still face. Thank you for you bravery! Keep up the good work. You guests, being academics are fantastic and know well whereof they speak. My favorite way of gauging the extent of sexism and racism is to speak to members of those groups and watch their eyes roll. Then speak to old white men. Enough said.

    Unbalanced but has potential
The conservative side definitely needs more airtime. (And I am a serious progressive) Not sure if that is a product of editing or if Hitha is just less vocal, but it doesn't really feel like they are having many back and forth conversations. It feels like Liz created this show to convince her friend to be more progressive... Could be easily remedied. Great concept but the delivery misses the mark. I will keep listening to see how it develops. Fingers crossed.

    Like it
The hosts are likeable and intelligent with thought-provoking topics and guests. I am a self-proclaimed liberal; however, it seems like the conservative view points on this podcast are very limited. Although, I probably won't agree with conservative commentary, it would be interesting to hear more thoughts and opinions from Hithra. Also, I hate the amount of time spent on advertising and sponsors!! The ad segments are longer than the actual talk segments!
  • Infiniteaaah
Needs more of the conservative viewpoint
I am a liberal feminist. I agree with Liz Plank just about 100%. But there are plenty of places to get those opinions validated. I was really looking forward to hearing an intelligent debate. The topics are interesting, but unfortunately Liz tramples all over Hitha (the more conservative host). Whenever things start to get interesting, she shuts it down. I will listen to a few more episodes, but if it doesn’t become more balanced, I will have to pass.
  • emilyrenviannn
Great idea but a little biased!
The show is ok. But would love to hear both liberal and conservative views equally! Seems to be a little more left leaning. Also the second episode is great because things were presented with factual evidence. I’d love to hear more than just opinions. Other than that the hosts are great!
  • Disappointed feminist
    Disappointed
The concept itself is AWESOME. Women are more often than not grouped as just that—women. I was hopeful that this podcast would shed light on the fact that women are incredibly diverse in opinion, experiences and lifestyles, and that has a huge effective on their political leanings. I’m a feminist because I believe in equality between the sexes. I was hopeful that the conversation between a “liberal” and a “conservative” would lead to a deeper discussion. Unfortunately, the podcast is primarily all one sided with guests taking up more talking time than Hitha. My opinions or those of others are not less valuable simply because they contradict yours. Super bummed!
  • SingItBack
    Divided
Amazing how many people used an iTunes review to go on a diatribe about their own personal political opinions. “I disagree with you so I’m giving you one star!” “Me and everyone I’ve ever met in my life switched parties because of people like the hosts!” This is a fine podcast and it deserves a chance.
  • EvDon925
    I enjoyed the discussion
I think both women are interesting, though I will say, speaking as someone who largely agrees with Liz Planks (the “liberal” side) positions and beliefs, much of the show seems to lean toward the liberal side.
  • n00bie09
    Love this show
I feel like everyone is super fair on this well produced show. No one is FoxNews-extreme and Liz clearly limits her progressive side a bit in the spirit of the show. More please!
  • A-Dizzle 123...456
    Definitely a different perspective...
The podcast is done well. You know, the sound quality and music is solid. Nice flow to it as well. The hosts are interesting and work well with their guests. It doesn't really feel like there's a liberal and a conservative discussing opposing views however. I do think they have a strong willingness to consider other ideas and even change their stance, which is quite refreshing. They both clearly have a strong distaste for men, but they clearly understand them equally as well as they seem to think men understand women. Hypocrisy is nothing new though. I'll check out a few more episodes.

    Meh
Was really excited for this pod. Downloaded both episodes and started listening but cannot get into it. Hope it gets better.
  • Jawdan
    Was hopeful... ultimately disappointed.
As someone who considers themselves “down the middle” on the political spectrum and a feminist, seeing this podcast gave me some hope that for once there would be two girls on opposing sides who will talk about why they and their party believe what they believe. The concept is absolutely awesome but this is just another liberal podcast that essentially shedding light on the liberal perspective more so than the conservative. I’ve always been someone who prefers to hear both side rather than one point of view. I hope they actually do what they say in their introduction because so far it’s been a flop.
  • Annoyed_user2
    Where is the conservative voice?
Listened to "Is that a gun I see in your corset?" but didn't hear the conservative voice. Was hoping for good conversation from both sides. Hitha, are you there?
  • love this and not even a DYIer
potential, needs some kinks worked out
Great concept but needs some tweaking. I didn’t hear from Hitha enough and would like to hear a real in-depth debate between these two. I desperately want to learn how the conservative side things, so I’d like to hear Hitha speaking up and citing her opinion and facts more.

    Not Quite There
TL;DR – 5 star concept, 2 star execution, needs a strong conservative guest, Interesting, will keep watching and update review if it improves. I was a pretty let down by this podcast. I am a big fan of political discussion and am especially interested in the serious feminine viewpoint, which has been missing from modern political discourse. I expected this to be a well-balanced podcast with a voice from the left and a voice from the right discussing and debating ideas in a civil way. I was thinking that I would get to see the impact that their identity as women had on those ideas. This podcast missed that mark by a bit. I realize that this is the first episode, and I will be watching it to see how it progresses, but it was a little painful to listen to. The commentator for the left seems to think of conservatives and their ideas as so alien and so foreign that they are unfathomable and incomprehensible, while the commentator on the right apologized for other women daring to think those things and explained how she wasn't "one of those sorts of conservatives" and that the party is evolving and moving left and would hopefully one day not be conservative anymore. After that, it was kind of just discussing how women on the right could not be feminists and that the right wing basically wanted to enslave women and take their rights away, while the right-wing commentator apologized some more. It was interesting, and I did listen to the whole thing. I would really like to see the conversation that this has started continue, and I am proud of vox for being brave enough to support something like this. I hope in the future they have some conservative women like Antonia Okafor, Candace Owens, Amanda Pretigiacomo, Cassie Jay, Allie Stuckey, Kassy Dillon, Karen Straughan, or literally any staunchly conservative female thinker on. Maybe even as part of a panel with both sides. Decent first episode, but I hope it gets better.
  • Raescornerblog
Had high hopes but dang, this was bad.
I would absolutely love a format like this. Great concept, poor delivery. You have got to find better reps of the conservative/progressive divide to actually articulate viewpoints. The level of progressive upspeak is just painful to listen to, and your conservative barely sounds like any thoughtful conservative I know. Sounds like upper class sorority girls "like talking about policies like totally I get it but seriously guys, seriously we like are gonna need like something better"...
  • jackasom
    Completely progressive
The conservative voice is more feminist than conservative. This is just more smug, liberal talking points. Not at all a real debate.
  • Lise_a
    Great Start!!
It's only the first episode, but i'm excited to see where this show goes. the hosts are two, strong and opinionated women who aren't afraid to take a stand. I'm excited to see how they handle discussing some of their larger disagreements on the show. Herzog and Plank obviously have affection for one another, and i'm excited to hear them really get into it.
  • BrambleOn
    Extremely annoying and obnoxious
These morons need to shut the hell up; nobody cares about what you think.

    Meh
I was hoping that the first episode was going to blow me a way with two intelligent women who showed that we as Americans could see eye to eye. Not exactly what I got. Interesting, but not something I will probably staye subscribed to. I do wish both personalities the best in their future.
  • Jygraphicd
    Amazing Potential
A show where someone from the left and someone from the right speak to some of the polorizing issues without screaming over each other for sensational effect?... sign me up! Like most people I'm tired of having the most extreme versions of the left and right speaking as if they represent everyone in their party. Please god yes, two people who can agree or disagree like adults. Would love to hear the show dive deep into some of the big "dividing" issues and really hear what both sides have to say. Like...one episode on abortion, one episode explaining the waves of feminism as they are defined today, one episode explaining exactly what people like or dont like about Trump or Clinton. Really excited about the potential of this pod.

This podcast is a fun way to listen to two different perspectives. I’m so ready for more episodes!
  • Simergh
A podcast that tries to cater to all but won't make anyone happy
The only saving grace of the first episode is the guest. I found the hosts boring and lacking in chemistry. Also the main takeaway "there are all kinds of women" is rather obvious. The hosts don't go deeper into issues. This podcast is lazy, humorless, and just plain bad.
  • kat29383
    Conservative Voice Completely Missing
I still fail to understand how feminists can go on and on about how the third wave is about “intersectionality” and “every woman’s experience” and in the same breath crap all over pro-life women. Honestly, and sadly, I’m not surprised.
  • GGGirl29
    Don't waste your time
I was extremely hopeful that this would be a spirited debate with both sides gaining insight from each other… it's not. It's basically the "Progressive Liberal Feminist" explaining why she's right. This condescending smugness from what I long considered "my people" is a big part of why so many of my friends and I switched from Democrat to Independent last year. We also didn't vote for Hillary, not because we "didn't want a female president" but because Hillary having a vagina didn't justify our overlooking the things we vehemently disagreed with her on. So, according to my former people, this makes me some sort of "female misogynist". How did we get to this point where CONSERVATIVES, of ALL people, are the ones who are embracing dialogue, Free Speech and Individualism instead of Liberals?
  • Talisman67
    A different perspective.

    Legit - Love this.
Have been waiting for this podcast my whole life it seems. Thank you Liz Plank and Hitha Herzog for taking this on. I want to have more honest and practical conversations with women about women's issues and this can only help. Thank you for being champions of women, and americans. <3
  • Denzel J-G
    Denzel J-G’s Review
Unprecedented. A show for the decades. This podcast reveals the long underrepresented, misunderstood, and strategically ignored complexity and depth of women in an easy to understand, yet still serious and possibly pragmatic format. The first episode is ambitious. It confronts the paradox of believing in women’s rights and issues, but also being a conservative. They also delve into the 2016 election and what it means for women seeking a powerful role, such as president, and all the double standards, sexism, and gender roles they must jump through. But the real gem of this podcast, is it’s ability to show perspectives from many angles; it’s usually the calling card of brainwashing when a news or educational program offers their specific viewpoint on a subject, and shouts down other opinions...like from almost all news media organizations/ corporations. But this show doesn’t rely on massive donations from big companies, politicians, or political businesses. That means they can give you good information, with less bias, because no one is telling them what to say. I hope it stays that way. The speakers ask the right questions, and they can’t be answered in a single episode so I look forward to many seasons to really tackle the existential issues facing our country.
