Total SF

196

A San Francisco culture podcast featuring celebrity guests, non-celebrity guests, personalities from the San Francisco Chronicle and a celebration of Bay Area life. Hosted by culture critic Peter Hartlaub and columnist Heather Knight and recorded on the streets, hilltops, parks and landmarks of San Francisco. The pair's focus on the whimsy and wonder of San Francisco began in 2018 when they rode every bus, train, cable car and street car in the city in one day. They believe in highlighting the eccentric characters, independent bookstores, burger joints and bars that make the bay so great.

    Love this Podcast
This podcast is fantastic. A true gem. I didn’t know there were others out there that love Bart as much as I do. Peter and Heather seem like people I would be friends with in real life. Love listening to this pod for a feel good happy. Their knowledge of SF past and present is incredible and I am here for it.

Deep love and appreciation of the City By The Bay
Heather Knight and Peter Hartlaub of the SF Chronicle are a treasure of the cities media landscape. They find the personalities that make the city tick and make them talk. Along the way they have wacky adventures and uncover hidden gems that otherwise might go under the radar. They’ve had me on the podcast as a guest several times, for instance. Five Stars.

Learn to live in ‘The City’
A down to earth guide on how to LIVE in SF and Bay Area and not just dwell here. Take this podcast to heart and you can connect with the city’s natural and subtle vibe.

    Big fan
I love the podcast. Because of you two I now have a long to-do, must-see list.

    Hate it
The two hosts have gone from fun-loving and doing interesting profiles of the City to beating their dead horse promoting slow streets, highway closure, and presenting only one side of the story. That’s not journalism, that propaganda. When your hard hitting question is “Where’s your favorite place to get a burritto?” you’re just calling it in. #ChronicleSoWhite

    Well done!

Hartlaub knocks it out the park and Heather is great too!
Intriguing topics, fascinating guests, good bumper music. Must listen for Bay Area residents, instructional for those of us who love SF but live far away. Jim Hayes would be proud indeed.

    For Al SF Lovers
This podcast brings me joy!!! Even though I’m in Chicago, my heart is in SF. Total SF is the next best thing to being home in the Bay Area. There is no replacing Herb Caen, but Heather Knight and Peter Hartlaub are ambassadors for the new millennium. Is it wrong that I want them to be my friends?

    Ambassadors of San Francisco
Peter and Heather are experts on where to go and what to see from the soles of your feet: experiencing a city as it should be. Observing life, people, parks, streets NOT from a car window. They tell us why we should care enough to support restaurants, movie theaters, bars, all the local places that make a place worthwhile.

If you are a local or coming to visit. Listen to this podcast
I live in the mission, the best burrito is made at Taqueria Guadalajara. You no longer need to ask that question to your guests it’s been answered. Other than that, I love this show and look forward to it every week. I believe it’s an essential podcast to listen to while the city starts to open up. Good job! I hope you make it to 100 reviews this week

    A true San Francisco podcast
When I need a break from the news and want to be reminded of all of the fun and inspiring things that have gone on or are going on in San Francisco, Total SF hits the spot. Heather and Peter put the spotlight on so many great local personalities, many who I, a proud almost-native, didn’t know about. Thanks Heather and Peter!

Love letter to the Bay Area
I always love seeing a new Big Event episode in my podcast queue! Peter’s knowledge and love of SF and the broader Bay Area is infectious, and the guests are always great. Even when the topic is one that I think I’m already an expert on, I learn something new and interesting. It’s like spending time with an old friend!

Interesting contents on bay area I haven't found anywhere else
I'm an immigrant and newcomer in bay area. This podcast offers a lot of local, personel, historical, emotional, fact-based insights into the Bay Area particularly SF culture scene. It makes me rediscover the city and feel more connected (or connected in another way besides 'tech'). I occasionally read SF Chronicle but the newspaper is too formal a media and lacks some straightforwardness and audacity. SF is such an amazing place with so many hidden gens. Please keep the good work!

    Epic every time!
    Always epic!

    Locals must (everyone should) listen
Really enjoyable conversations about people and places in the Bay Area. Insider without being pretentious. Start with “Destination: Hangover” for a sentimental and practical conversation about the best late night and not so early morning shame eating locations. Anybody who ever brought a big group to a Lyons in high school can relate. You will end the pod with a list of places you want to go to and a hearty appetite.
